The 1998 book, Choice Theory: A New Psychology of Personal Freedom, is the primary text for all that is taught by The William Glasser Institute. Choice theory states that:all we do is behave,
that almost all behavior is chosen, and
that we are driven by our genes to satisfy five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun.
In practice, the most important need is love and belonging, as closeness and connectedness with the people we care about is a requisite for satisfying all of the needs.
Choice theory, with the Seven Caring Habits, replaces external control psychology and the Seven Deadly Habits. External control, the present psychology of almost all people in the world, is destructive to relationships. When used, it will destroy the ability of one or both to find satisfaction in that relationship and will result in a disconnection from each other. Being disconnected is the source of almost all human problems such as what is called mental illness, drug addiction, violence, crime, school failure, spousal abuse, to mention a few.

The Ten Axioms of Choice Theory
1. The only person whose behavior we can control is our own.
2. All we can give another person is information.
3. All long-lasting psychological problems are relationship problems.
4. The problem relationship is always part of our present life.
5. What happened in the past has everything to do with what we are today, but we can only satisfy our basic needs right now and plan to continue satisfying them in the future.
6. We can only satisfy our needs by satisfying the pictures in our Quality World.
7. All we do is behave.
8. All behavior is Total Behavior and is made up of four components: acting, thinking, feeling and physiology
9. All Total Behavior is chosen, but we only have direct control over the acting and thinking components. We can only control our feeling and physiology indirectly through how we choose to act and think.
10. All Total Behavior is designated by verbs and named by the part that is the most recognizable.

I am so glad to find a blog created by someone with a Glasser certification. I am a teacher withdegrees in specail education and administration. I have been a student of Glasser since the 80's. His ideas make the most sense to me relative to any of theother ideas I have read. I do think the Adler approach is worhtwhile, however. I am currently in training to rreceive my Glasser certification. I hope to do my Advanced Week this summer with Bob Wobolding.
Personal Responsibility:
I will be writing to relate my experiences as I embark on a journey to fitness and physical health. 36 weeks ago my doctor informed me that unless I get in shape and lose weight, I could expect a heart attack failrly soon.
Needless to say, my quality world was shattered, as I am a former marathon runner and sports enthusiast. I have since lost 31 pounds and have droppped three pants sizes!! I am on the last leg of the journey to goal weight.
I still make mistakes and when the mistakes get in the way of me coordinating my quality world with my living world, I depress and anxietize. In an irrational way, sometimes that feels better than working out. When I get ok again, I think of the Glasser concepts and things begin to clear.
Thank you, Banjo Player for sharing your journey to to satisfy your updated quality world. Always remember that only by changing the 2 front wheels of the car of the total behaviour, that the 2 rear wheels of feeling and physiology follow. Sometimes despite my not feeling like going for a jog, I just have to take the initial steps of changing into my jogging gear and start stretching, and soon afterwards the feeling of going for a jog takes over. I found Choice Theory to be very informative in why we feel what we feel. The diagram with the filter, the brain, and the point of making a choice revealed to me there needs to be something that happens within ourselves. I call it "The Painful Pause" because one has to stop and think then respond, instead of just reacting off the cuff. It takes practice to hold your tongue but it is a great thing to be able to do. It stops anger from being in control, but to do it is somewhat painful mentally. To react can be troublesome . . . to respond can be enlightening.
